Install an H100/H200 GPU and heat sink module

Follow instructions in this section to install an H100/H200 GPU and heat sink module. The procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

About this task

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.
  • Touch the static-protective package that contains the component to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove it from the package and place it on a static-protective surface.
  • Two people and one lifting device on site that can support up to 400 lb (181 kg) are required to perform this procedure. If you do not already have a lifting device available, Lenovo offers the Genie Lift GL-8 material lift that can be purchased at Data Center Solution Configurator. Make sure to include the Foot-release brake and the Load Platform when ordering the Genie Lift GL-8 material lift.
  • Make sure to inspect the connectors and sockets on the GPU and the GPU baseboard. Do not use the GPU or the GPU baseboard if its connectors are damaged or missing, or if there are debris in the sockets. Replace the GPU or the GPU baseboard with a new one before continuing the installation procedure.
  • GPU and heat sink is one part. Do not remove the heat sink from the GPU.
  • The following illustration shows the GPU and heat sink module numbering and corresponding slot numbering in XCC.

Note
Make sure you have the required tools listed below available to properly replace the component:
  • Torque screwdriver which can be set to 0.1-0.62 newton-meters, 0.9-5.5 inch-pounds
  • Torx T15 extended bit (6-inch long)
Firmware and driver download: You might need to update the firmware or driver after replacing a component.

Procedure

  1. (Optional) Complete the following steps for the new GPU and heat sink module.
    • Remove the connector covers at the bottom.


    • Attach the FRU part number label.
      1. Remove the protective film from the plastic cover.
      2. Attach the FRU part number label to the plastic cover.


    • Remove the plastic cover from the heat sink.


  2. Grasp the GPU and heat sink module with both hands; then, align the GPU and heat sink module with the two guide holes on the GPU baseboard and gently place it onto the GPU baseboard.

  3. Follow the sequence shown in the illustration below to fasten the four Torx T15 screws to secure the GPU and heat sink module.
    Note
    • First set the torque screwdriver to 0.1-0.12 newton-meters, 0.9-1.1 inch-pounds to fasten the screws for a few rounds. Then set the torque screwdriver to 0.58-0.62 newton-meters, 5-5.5 inch-pounds to fully fasten the screws.
    • A flashlight helps to locate the screw holes.

  4. Place the plastic cover onto the GPU and heat sink module until it is securely seated.

After you finish

  1. (GPU and heat sink module 2, 4, 5, and 7 only) Reinstall the GPU air duct. See Install an H100/H200 GPU air duct.
  2. Reinstall the power complex. See Install the power complex.
  3. Reinstall the 8U GPU shuttle. See Install the 8U GPU shuttle.
  4. Reinstall all the 2.5-inch hot-swap drives or drive bay fillers (if any) into the drive bays. See Install a 2.5-inch hot-swap drive
  5. Reinstall all the front fans. See Install a hot-swap fan (front and rear).
  6. Reinstall all the power supply units. See Install a hot-swap power supply unit.
  7. Complete the parts replacement. See Complete the parts replacement.
