Fan replacement

Use the following procedures to remove and install a fan. Fans are at the front of the server behind the front cover.

Two types of fans are supported:

  • 60 mm x 38mm, 16K internal hot-swap fans (01CX965)

  • 60 mm x 38mm, 19K internal hot-swap fans (01PG490)

Note

  • Different fan types cannot be mixed within a system. All fans must be either 16K fans or 19K fans.

  • Before upgrading fans from 16K to 19K, you must make sure that the system has version 2 of the ThinkSystem 2-CPU, 24-DIMM, Compute System Board (01CV978) installed in each compute tray.

  • Remove a fan
    Press the fan handle inward toward the center of the server to release the latch; then, pull the fan forward halfway, and wait 10 seconds before pulling the fan out of the server. Fans are hot-swap devices that can be removed while the server is powered on.
  • Install the fan
    Insert the fan in the front of the chassis; then, push it in until it stops and the latch engages. Fans are hot-swap devices that can be installed while the server is powered on.
