Install an optical drive or a tape drive
Use this information to install an optical drive or a tape drive.
- Do not remove the covers. Removing the covers of the laser product could result in exposure to hazardous laser radiation. There are no serviceable parts inside the device.
- Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein might result in hazardous radiation exposure.
Laser radiation when open. Do not stare into the beam, do not view directly with optical instruments, and avoid direct exposure to the beam.
If the drive bay is covered by a filler, remove it first. Store the filler in case that you later remove the optical drive or the tape drive and need the filler to cover the place. To remove the filler, complete the following steps:
Remove the front bezel and then remove the cover of the drive bay filler from the front bezel.

Remove the drive bay filler out of the chassis.

Touch the static-protective package that contains the new optical drive or tape drive to any unpainted surface on the outside of the server. Then, take the new optical drive or tape drive out of the package and place it on a static-protective surface.
To install an optical drive or a tape drive, complete the following steps:
- Remove the retainer from the chassis.Figure 3. Drive retainer removal
- Install the retainer on only the left side of the optical drive or tape drive.Figure 4. Optical drive retainer installation
- Hold the optical drive or tape drive in correct orientation and then slide it into the drive bay until it snaps into position.Figure 5. Optical drive installation
