Working with virtual datacenters

A virtual datacenter is a logical grouping of compute and storage resources allocated from one or more migration zones and one or more storage pools.

In ThinkAgile CP, the virtual datacenter is the ultimate organizing construct to manage allocations. Infrastructure admin users can create specific datacenters for users that include the precise allocation of compute, storage, and network resources they need. Your users can allocate storage and create as many applications as they need without assistance from a storage or virtualization administrator.

VM instances are deployed in virtual datacenters, and a virtual datacenter must have both compute and storage allocations before it can be used to deploy instances.

• Creating Virtual Datacenters
  Infrastructure admin users can create new virtual datacenters and allocate resources to those virtual datacenters in the ThinkAgile CP Cloud Controller.
• Viewing virtual datacenter information
  The ThinkAgile CP Cloud Controller management portal allows you to easily view the virtual datacenters to which you have access in your ThinkAgile CP environment. This includes statistics and metrics related to CPU, memory, and storage as well as resource allocation and usage information.

  You can view all application instances that are currently created within the VDC.
• Viewing virtual datacenter templates
  You can view all templates that are available to the VDC.
• Creating a firewall override
  A firewall override can be used to override any existing firewall profiles for a specific VDC. Infrastructure admin users and VDC manager users can set up firewall overrides.
• Registering an external backup repository
  Before you can save application instance backups to an external backup repository, you must first register that repository. However, you must first register the repository with ThinkAgile CP. You must be logged in as an infrastructure admin user or a VDC manager user to register an external backup repository.
• Viewing virtual datacenter users
  You can view the list of VDC manager and VDC viewer users for a virtual datacenter. You can click the Last Name column to sort the list of users.
• Managing virtual datacenters
  Infrastructure admin users can perform a variety of actions on virtual datacenters, such as renaming, deleting, and changing allocations for a virtual datacenter.
• Managing application groups
  Infrastructure admin users and VDC manager users can create application groups to group application instances together that belong to the same virtual datacenter. (Application group names must be unique in a given virtual datacenter.) You can then easily view information for the instances in the group by selecting and viewing the application group from the left navigation menu in the ThinkAgile CP Cloud Controller.
