Remove an M.2 boot drive

Follow instructions in this section to remove an M.2 boot drive from the I/O module board.

About this task

To avoid potential danger, make sure to read and follow the safety information.

    disconnect all power
    CAUTION
    The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.

Depending on the specific configuration, the I/O module board might look different from the illustrations in this section.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    • If applicable, unlock or remove any locking device that secures the top cover, such as a Kensington lock; then, remove the top cover (see Remove the top cover).

    • Disconnect all the drive cables from the system board; then, remove the drive cage from the node (see Remove the drive cage).

  2. Remove the M.2 boot drive from the I/O module board.
    1. Remove the screw that secures the M.2 drive.
    2. Lift up the screw side of the M.2 drive at an angle.
    3. Pull the M.2 drive away from the connector to remove it.

  3. (Optional) If necessary, remove the M.2 heat sink and the M.2 drive from the tray.
    1. Press the tabs on the M.2 and heat sink tray to disengage the heat sink.
      Note
      If necessary, press the tabs with a flat-head screwdriver.
    2. Lift the M.2 heat sink out of the tray.
    3. Slide the M.2 drive outward and remove it from the tray.

After this task is completed

  • If necessary, peel off the thermal pad from the M.2 drive or M.2 heat sink.
  • Install a replacement unit (see Install an M.2 boot drive).
  • If you are instructed to return the component, follow all of the packaging instructions and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
