Remove a hot-swap drive

Follow instructions in this section to remove a hot-swap drive.

About this task

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to make sure that you work safely.

  • To make sure that there is adequate system cooling, do not operate the server for more than two minutes without either a drive or a filler installed in each bay.
  • If one or more NVMe solid-state drives are to be removed, it is recommended to disable them beforehand via the operating system.
  • Before removing or making changes to drives, drive controllers (including controllers that are integrated on the system board), drive backplanes or drive cables, make sure to back up all important data that is stored on drives.
  • Make sure to have the drive bay fillers available if some drive bays will be left empty after the removal.
Note
  • Depending on the specific configuration, the drives, drive bay fillers, or drive cage might look different from the illustrations in this section.

Important
  • To avoid damage to the drive connectors when removing or installing a hot-swap drive, make sure that
    • the node is securely placed within an enclosure; or that
    • the top cover is in place and fully closed, when the node is not installed in an enclosure.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. If applicable, remove the shipping bracket from the enclosure or security bezel from the node sleeve (see Configuration guide).
    2. Identify the drive to be removed.
  2. Remove the drive from the drive bay.
    1. Slide the latch to unlock the drive handle.
    2. Pull the handle to open it.
    3. Slide the drive out of the drive bay.
