Remove a drive backplane

Follow instructions in this section to remove a drive backplane from the drive cage.

About this task

To avoid potential danger, make sure to read and follow the safety information.

    disconnect all power
    CAUTION
    The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.

  • Depending on the specific configuration, there may be one or two backplanes for the drives:

  • Depending on the specific configuration, the drives, drive bay fillers, or drive cage might look different from the illustrations in this section.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. Remove all the installed hot-swap drives and drive bay fillers from the drive cage; then, set them aside on a static-protective surface (see Remove a hot-swap drive).
    2. If applicable, unlock or remove any locking device that secures the top cover, such as a Kensington lock; then, remove the top cover (see Remove the top cover).
    3. Disconnect all the cables from the drive backplane(s); then, remove the drive cage from the node (see Remove the drive cage).
    4. Lay the drive cage on a flat, static-protective surface.
  2. Remove Drive backplane 2 (upper).
    1. Remove the 3 screws that secure Drive-backplane 2.
    2. Disengage and remove Drive-backplane 2.

  3. Remove Drive backplane 1 (lower) from the drive cage.
    1. Remove the two hex standoffs that secure Drive-backplane 1.
    2. Disengage and remove Drive-backplane 1.

      Note

      The hex standoffs are designed to be used with a common Phillips screwdriver or flat-head screwdriver.

 

After this task is completed

  • Install a replacement unit (see Install a drive backplane).
  • If you are instructed to return the component, follow all of the packaging instructions and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
