Remove a memory module

Follow instructions in this section to remove a memory module.

About this task

To avoid potential danger, make sure to read and follow the safety information.

  • S002
    disconnect all power
    CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.
Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to make sure that you work safely.

  • Remove the shipping bracket or security bezel, if applicable (see Configuration guide); then, power off the server and disconnect the power cords (see Power off the server).

  • Remove the node from the enclosure or node sleeve, if applicable (see Configuration guide); then, carefully lay the node on a flat, static-protective surface.

  • Memory modules are sensitive to static discharge and require special handling. Refer to the standard guidelines for Handling static-sensitive devices.
    • Always wear an electrostatic-discharge strap when removing or installing memory modules. Electrostatic-discharge gloves can also be used.
    • Never hold two or more memory modules together so that they do not touch each other. Do not stack memory modules directly on top of each other during storage.
    • Never touch the gold memory module connector contacts or allow these contacts to touch the outside of the memory module connector housing.
    • Handle memory modules with care: never bend, twist, or drop a memory module.
    • Do not use any metal tools (such as jigs or clamps) to handle the memory modules, because the rigid metals may damage the memory modules.
    • Do not insert memory modules while holding packages or passive components, which can cause package cracks or detachment of passive components by the high insertion force.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. If applicable, unlock or remove any locking device that secures the top cover, such as a Kensington lock; then, remove the top cover (see Remove the top cover).
    2. If necessary, remove the intrusion switch (see Remove the intrusion switch with cable).
    3. Locate the memory module slots and identify which memory module is to be removed.
Figure 1. Location of the memory module slots on the system board
      Location of the dimm slots
  2. Remove the memory module from the slot.
    1. Carefully Open the retaining clip to disengage the memory module. One end of the module will be slightly higher than the other.
    2. Grasp the memory module on both ends; then, carefully lift it vertically to remove it out of the slot.
    Attention
    • To avoid breaking the retaining clips or damaging the memory module slots, handle the clips gently.
    • If necessary, due to space constraints, you can use a pointed tool to open the retaining clips. Place the tip of the tool in the recess on the top of the retaining clip; then, carefully rotate the retaining clip away from the memory module slot. Make sure you use firm and solid pointed tool to open the latch. Do not use pencils or other fragile tools.

After this task is completed

  • If necessary, install a replacement memory module to the empty slot (see Install a memory module).
  • If you are instructed to return the component, follow all of the packaging instructions and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
