Install the system board

Use this information to install the system board.

Attention

Removing and installing this component requires trained technicians. Do no attempt to remove or install it without proper training.

Before you install a system board, complete the following steps:

Read the following section(s) to ensure that you work safely.

Touch the static-protective package that contains the component to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove it from the package and place it on a static-protective surface.

To install the system board, complete the following steps:

Insert the system board into the chassis with an angle, so serial and VGA port can be inserted in the slots on the rear chassis.
1. Place the system board flat into the chassis, screw slots on the system board will match the screw slots on the chassis.

Install all eight screws to secure the system board to the chassis.

Install the following components:
- Install CPU socket cover to the defected board, right after the new system board is installed into the chassis.
- Install the processor (see Install the processor).
- Install the heat sink (see Install the heat sink).
- Install the DIMMs (see Install a DIMM).
- Install the TPM card (for Chinese Mainland only) if necessary (see Install the TPM card (for Chinese Mainland only)).
- Install the riser adapter if necessary (see Install an adapter).
- Install the PCIe riser assembly if necessary (see Install the PCIe riser assembly).
- Install the RAID adapter if necessary (see Install the RAID adapter).
- Install the flash power module if necessary (see Install the flash power module).
- Install the M.2 drive if necessary (see Install the M.2 drive).
- Connect front operator panel or the front I/O assembly cables (see Install the front operator panel (3.5-inch HDD model) or Install the front operator panel (2.5-inch HDD model)).
- Connect the backplate or the backplane cables (see Install the backplate or Install the hot-swap drive backplane).
- Install the air baffle (see Install the air baffle).
- Connect the fan cables (see Install a fan).

After you install the system board, complete the following steps:

Install the top cover onto the server (see Install the top cover).
Install the server into the rack if necessary.
Reconnect power cords and all external cables.
Update the machine type and serial number with new vital product data (VPD). Use the Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager to update the machine type and serial number. See Update the machine type and serial number.
Enable TPM. See Enable TPM/TCM.
Optionally, enable UEFI Secure Boot. See Enable UEFI Secure Boot.
