Remove the drive cage and trayless drives

About this task

Attention
  • Go over Installation Guidelines to ensure that you work with safety.

  • Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables (see Power off the server).

  • If the server is installed in a rack, slide the server out on its rack slide rails to gain access to the top cover, or remove the server from the rack.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. If applicable, remove the security bezel (see Remove the security bezel).

    2. Remove the top covers (see Remove the top covers).

    3. Remove the air baffle (see Remove the air baffle).

    4. Remove both PCIe riser assemblies (see Remove the PCIe riser assemblies and adapters).

    5. Remove the fan cage assembly (see Remove the fan cage assembly).

    6. Remove the M.2 boot adapter (see Remove the M.2 boot adapter and drives).

    7. Disconnect all the signal and power cables from the system board.

  2. Loosen the two captive screws to disengage the drive cage, and remove it.

  3. Disengage the cables from the drive cage. Then, loosen the two captive screws that secure the cover to the cage, and remove the cover.

  4. To remove the drives from the drive cage, proceed to the topic corresponding to the system configuration.

Remove the 7mm trayless drives

Procedure

  1. Lift the two upper drives and remove them.

  2. Remove the drive spacer.

    Note
    Make sure to keep the spacer for future use. In the case that there is not immediate need of the spacer, store it on the bottom of the drive cage.

  3. Slide the two lower drives out from the drive cage to remove them.

Remove the 15mm trayless drives

Procedure

Slide the two drives out from the drive cage to remove them.

After this task is completed

  • Install replacement units (see Install the drive cage and trayless drives).
  • If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
