Remove GPU adapter link bridges

Follow the instructions in this section to remove GPU adapter link bridges.

  • Power off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the server.

  • Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.

  • Follow the additional instructions in any documentation that comes with the GPU adapter.

Depending on the type, the GPU adapter might look slightly different from the illustrations in this section.

Proceed to the section corresponding to the configuration:

Procedure

Note
Make sure you have a suction cup available to properly remove the component.

  1. Make preparation for the task.
    1. If the server is installed in a rack, slide the server out on its rack slide rails to gain access to the top cover, or remove the server from the rack. See Remove the server from the rack.
    2. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    3. Remove the riser assembly. See Remove a front riser assembly.
  2. Remove the side support bracket from the riser cage.

    1. Loosen the two screws at the rear of riser cage.
    2. Loosen the two screws at the front of riser cage.
    3. Remove the side support bracket from the riser cage.
  3. Remove the GPU adapter link bridge from the GPU adapers with a suction cup.
    1. Press the suction cup against the GPU adapter link bridge until it adheres to the GPU adapter link bridge.

    2. Pull up the suction cup and remove the GPU adapter link bridge together with the suction cup from the GPU adapters.

  4. Repeat 3 to the other GPU adapter link bridges until all GPU adapter link bridges are removed from the GPU adapters.

Procedure

Note
Make sure you have two NVIDIA bridge removal tools available to properly remove the component.

  1. Make preparation for the task.
    1. If the server is installed in a rack, slide the server out on its rack slide rails to gain access to the top cover, or remove the server from the rack. See Remove the server from the rack.
    2. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    3. Remove the system fan cage. See Remove the system fan cage.
    4. Remove the front high watts GPU air duct. See Remove the front high watts GPU air duct.
    5. Remove the front high watts GPU riser assembly. See Remove a front high watts GPU riser assembly.
    1. Complete Step 1 to 5 in Remove a front high watts GPU adapter.
  2. Disengage the link bridge from the GPU adapters.
    1. Insert two NVIDIA bridge removal tools into the space between both ends of the link bridge and GPU adapters.
    2. Engage the hooks with the bottom of the link bridge.
    3. Gently press the removal tools down to disengage the link bridge from the GPU adapters.
    Note
    Make sure to use two removal tools to disengage both ends of the link bridge at the same time to avoid tilting that might cause damage to the connectors.

  3. Remove the link bridge from the GPU adapters.

After you finish

  • If you are not installing a replacement unit, install link connector covers onto the GPU adapters.

  • To install a replacement unit, see Install GPU adapter link bridges.

  • If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
