Remove the fan board

Follow instructions in this section to remove the fan board.

About this task

Important

This task must be operated by trained technicians that are certified by Lenovo Service. Do not attempt to remove or install the part without proper training and qualification.

disconnect all power
CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.
Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • Power off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the server.

  • Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for the task.
    1. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    2. If your server comes with an air baffle, remove it first. See Remove the air baffle.
    3. If your server comes with a middle drive cage, remove it first. See Middle drive cage and drive backplane replacement.
    4. Remove system fans. See Remove a system fan.
    5. Remove the system fan cage. See Remove the system fan cage.
    6. (Optional) If your server comes with a T-shape heat sink, remove it first. See Remove a heat sink.
    7. Remove the system board assembly out of chassis. See Remove the processor board.
    8. Disconnect fan power and fan sideband cables from the fan board. See Connections between the processor board and fan board.
    9. Move or disconnect other cables that go right over the fan board.
  2. Remove the fan board.

    1. Remove the screws from the fan board.
    2. Gently hold and lift the fan board from the system board tray.

After you finish

  • If you are replacing the fan board, install a new fan board. See Install the fan board.

  • If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
