Install a PCIe riser card

Follow instructions in this section to install a PCIe riser card.

About this task

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.
  • Touch the static-protective package that contains the component to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove it from the package and place it on a static-protective surface.
Note

Procedure

  1. If necessary, attach the labels onto the PCIe riser cables as illustrated.
    Note
Depending on the configuration, see PCIe riser cable routing (server model with three PCIe risers) or PCIe riser cable routing (server model with four PCIe risers) to identify the corresponding labels for the cables.

2 Label (located near straight-end of cable)4 Label sheet for PCIe riser cable (from labels kit)
    1. Attach the white space portion of the label near the straight-end of the PCIe riser cable.
    2. Wrap the label around the cable and attach it onto the white space portion.

  3. Install the PCIe riser card.
    1. Align the PCIe riser card with the screw holes on the PCIe riser cage.
    2. Fasten the two screws to secure the PCIe riser card to the PCIe riser cage.
    3. Connect the cables(s) to the PCIe riser card.
      Note
Depending on the configuration, connect one cable or two cables to the PCIe riser card.
      • One cable:
        • 7mm/x16 PCIe G5 Riser 1 FHHL (connect the cable to the bottom connector)
        • x16/x8/Serial PCIe G4 Riser 2/C HHHL (connect the cable to the top connector)
        • x16/x8/Serial PCIe G5 Riser 2/C HHHL (connect the cable to the top connector)
        • x8/x16/x16 PCIe G4 Riser 1/3 FHFL
        • x8/x16/x16 PCIe G4 Riser D HHHL
        • x8/x16/x16 PCIe G5 Riser D HHHL
      • Two cables:
        • x16/x8/x8 PCIe G4 Riser 2/A/B/C HHHL
        • x16/x8/x8 PCIe G5 Riser 2/A/B/C HHHL
        • x16/x16 PCIe G5 Riser 1/3 FHFL
    4. Align the PCIe retainer with the screw holes on the PCIe riser card.
    5. Fasten the three screws to secure the PCIe retainer to the PCIe riser card.

  4. Connect the cable(s) to the outside of the PCIe riser.
    Note
Depending on the configuration, connect one cable or two cables to the PCIe riser card.
    • One cable:
      • 7mm/x16 PCIe G5 Riser 1 FHHL (connect the cable to the bottom connector)
    • Two cables:
