- Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.
- Power off the server and disconnect all power cords for this task.
- If the server is in a rack, remove it from the rack.
- If the server is installed in a rack, extend the server from the rack.
- Remove any locking device that secures the server cover, such as a Kensington lock or a pad lock.

- If foot stands are installed on the server, rotate them inwards and lay the server on its side for easier operation.

Touch the static-protective package that contains the component to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove it from the package and place it on a static-protective surface.

- Reconnect the power cords and any cables that you removed.
- Power on the server and any peripheral devices.
