Intermittent problems

Use this information to solve server intermittent problems.

  • Follow the suggested actions in the order in which they are listed in the Action column until the problem is solved.
  • See Parts listing, System x3850 X6 and x3950 X6 Type 6241 to determine which components are customer replaceable units (CRU) and which components are field replaceable units (FRU).
  • If an action step is preceded by (Trained service technician only), that step must be performed only by a Trained service technician.

Intermittent external device problems
  1. Make sure that the correct device drivers are installed. See the manufacturer's website for documentation.
  2. For a USB device, complete the following steps:
    1. Make sure that the device is configured correctly (see Using the Setup utility).
    2. Connect the device to another port. If using a USB hub, remove the hub and connect the device directly to the server. Make sure that the device is configured correctly for the port (see Using the Setup utility).
Intermittent KVM problems
For video, complete the following steps:
  1. Make sure that all cables and the console breakout cable are properly connected and secure.
  2. Make sure that the monitor is working properly by testing it on another server.
  3. Test the console breakout cable on a working server to ensure that it is operating properly. Replace the console breakout cable if it is defective.
