Remove a memory module

Use this information to remove a memory module.

S002
disconnect all power
CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.

About this task

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • If applicable, remove the security bezel. See Remove the security bezel.

  • Power off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the server.

  • If the server is installed in a rack, remove the server from the rack. See Remove the server from the rack.

  • Make sure to remove or install memory module 20 seconds after disconnecting power cords from the system. It allows the system to be completely discharged of electricity and safe for handling memory module.

  • If the server is installed in a rack, remove the server from the rack. See Remove the server from the rack.

  • Memory modules are sensitive to static discharge and require special handling. Refer to the standard guidelines for Handling static-sensitive devices.
    • Always wear an electrostatic-discharge strap when removing or installing memory modules. Electrostatic-discharge gloves can also be used.

    • Never hold two or more memory modules together so that they do not touch each other. Do not stack memory modules directly on top of each other during storage.

    • Never touch the gold memory module connector contacts or allow these contacts to touch the outside of the memory module connector housing.

    • Handle memory modules with care: never bend, twist, or drop a memory module.

    • Do not use any metal tools (such as jigs or clamps) to handle the memory modules, because the rigid metals may damage the memory modules.

    • Do not insert memory modules while holding packages or passive components, which can cause package cracks or detachment of passive components by the high insertion force.

Procedure

Attention

Make sure to remove or install memory module 20 seconds after disconnecting power cords from the system. It allows the system to be completely discharged of electricity and safe for handling memory module.

  1. Make preparation for this task.
    1. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    2. Remove all the PCIe assemblies. If the configuration comes with PCIe riser 2 and internal drives, remove all the internal drives, and lift the internal drive backplane before removing PCIe riser 2. See Remove the PCIe riser assembly.
    3. Remove the processor air baffle. See Remove the processor air baffle.
    4. Locate the memory module slots and determine which memory module you want to remove from the server.
Figure 1. Memory modules and processor layout

  2. Remove the memory module from the slot.
    1. Open the retaining clip to disengage the memory module.
    2. Grasp the memory module at both ends and carefully lift it out of the slot.
    Attention
    • To avoid breaking the retaining clips or damaging the memory module slots, handle the clips gently.

    Note

If necessary, due to space constraints, use a pointed tool to open the retaining clips. Place the tip of the tool in the recess on the top of the retaining clip; then, carefully rotate the retaining clip away from the memory module slot. Make sure to use firm and solid pointed tool to open the latch. Do not use pencils or other fragile tools.

After this task is completed
  1. Install a replacement unit. See Install a memory module.

  2. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
