Remove the PCIe riser

Follow the instructions in this section to remove the PCIe riser.

About this task

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • Power off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect the power cords and all external cables. See Power off the server.

  • Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.

  • If the server is installed in a rack, slide the server out on its rack slide rails to gain access to the top covers, or remove the server from the rack. See Remove the server from rails.

Depending on your configuration, follow the corresponding procedures below for proper removal procedure.

Remove PCIe riser 2

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for the task.
    1. Remove the front top cover. See Remove the front top cover.
    2. Remove the rear top cover. See Remove the rear top cover.
    3. Remove the crossbar. See Remove the crossbar.
  2. Remove PCIe riser 2.

    1. Disconnect the PCIe riser 2 assembly cables from the system board assembly. See PCIe riser 2 cable routing for more information on the internal cable routing.
    2. Grasp and lift the PCIe riser to remove it from the chassis.
    3. Record the cable connections and disconnect all internal cables from the PCIe adapters.

Remove PCIe riser 1

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for the task.
    1. Remove the front top cover. See Remove the front top cover.
    2. Remove the rear top cover. See Remove the rear top cover.
    3. Remove the crossbar. See Remove the crossbar.
  2. Remove PCIe riser 2.

    1. Disconnect the PCIe riser 2 assembly cables from the system board assembly. See PCIe riser 2 cable routing for more information on the internal cable routing.
    2. Grasp and lift the PCIe riser to remove it from the chassis.
    3. Record the cable connections and disconnect all internal cables from the PCIe adapters.
  3. Remove PCIe riser 1.

    1. Disconnect the PCIe riser 1 cables from the system board assembly. See PCIe riser 1 cable routing for more information on the internal cable routing.
    2. Disconnect the power cable from the PCIe riser; then, grasp and lift the PCIe riser to remove it from the chassis.
    3. Record the cable connections and disconnect all internal cables from the PCIe adapters.

Remove PCIe riser 3

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for the task.
    1. Remove the front top cover. See Remove the front top cover.
    2. Remove the rear top cover. See Remove the rear top cover.
    3. Remove the crossbar. See Remove the crossbar.
  2. Remove PCIe riser 2.

    1. Disconnect the PCIe riser 2 assembly cables from the system board assembly. See PCIe riser 2 cable routing for more information on the internal cable routing.
    2. Grasp and lift the PCIe riser to remove it from the chassis.
    3. Record the cable connections and disconnect all internal cables from the PCIe adapters.
  3. If a 7mm drive cage is installed in PCIe riser 3, remove PCIe riser 1 and disconnect the 7mm drive cables.

    1. Disconnect the PCIe riser 1 cables from the system board assembly. See PCIe riser 1 cable routing for more information on the internal cable routing.
    2. Disconnect the power cable from the PCIe riser; then, grasp and lift the PCIe riser to remove it from the chassis.
    3. Record the cable connections and disconnect all internal cables from the PCIe adapters.
    4. Disconnect the 7mm drive cables from the system board assembly. See 7mm drive backplane cable routing.
  4. Remove PCIe riser 3.

    1. Disconnect the PCIe riser 3 assembly cables from the system board assembly. See PCIe riser 3 cable routing for more information on the internal cable routing.
    2. Disconnect the power cable from the PCIe riser; then, grasp and lift the PCIe riser to remove it from the chassis.
    3. Record the cable connections and disconnect all internal cables from the PCIe adapters.

After you finish

  1. If you plan to replace the PCIe riser, remove the PCIe adapters. See Remove a PCIe adapter.

  2. Install a replacement unit or filler. See Install the PCIe riser.

  3. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
