Installing the 2.5-inch hard disk drive backplane

Use this information to install the 2.5-inch hard disk drive backplane.

Read the safety information in Safety and Installation guidelines.

If you are replacing a server component in the server, you need to turn off the server and peripheral devices, and disconnect the power cords and all external cables.

To install a 2.5-inch hard disk drive backplane, complete the following steps.
  1. Unlock and remove the left-side cover (see Removing the left-side cover).
  2. Open the bezel by pressing the button on the left edge of the bezel, and rotate the left side of the bezel away from the server.

  3. Remove the air baffle (see Removing the air baffle).
  4. Remove the fan cage assembly (see Removing the fan cage assembly).
  5. Touch the static-protective package that contains the hard disk drive backplane to any unpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove the backplane from the package.
  6. Position the 2.5-inch hard disk drive backplane in the drive-cage retention tabs; then, rotate the top of the backplane toward the locator pins until the latches click into place.

  7. Connect the power, signal, and configuration cables to the 2.5-inch hard disk drive backplane (see Hard disk drive backplane connectors and Internal cable routing and connectors).
  8. If you are replacing another 2.5-inch hard disk drive backplane, repeat steps 5 to 7 to install the additional backplane.
  9. Install the 2.5-inch hot-swap hard disk drives (see Installing a 2.5-inch hot-swap hard disk drive).
  10. Close the bezel.
  11. Install the fan cage assembly (see Installing the fan cage assembly).
  12. Install the air baffle (see Installing the air baffle).
  13. Install and lock the left-side cover (see Installing the left-side cover).

If you have replaced a server component or installed an optional device in the server, you need to reconnect the power cords and all external cables, and turn on the server and peripheral devices.
