Remove the rear I/O module

Follow instructions in this section to remove the rear I/O module.

About this task

To avoid potential danger, make sure to read and follow the safety information.

Attention

Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to make sure that you work safely.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. Power off the node (see Power off the node); then, disconnect all external cables from the node.
      Note
If necessary, press the release clip with a flat-head screwdriver to remove an external network cable from the rear of a 2U node.

    2. Remove the node from the chassis (see Remove a node from the chassis); then, carefully lay the node on a flat, static-protective surface, orienting the node with the front toward you.
      Note
      • When removing the node, note the node tray number and make sure to install the node in the same tray from which it was removed. Reinstalling the node into a different tray requires the node to be reconfigured.
      • For safety, make sure to hold the node with both hands when lifting the node.
    3. Remove the top cover (see Remove the top cover).
    4. If the GPU air duct is installed in the node, remove it (see Remove the GPU air duct).
    5. If the internal adapter bracket is installed, disconnect all the cables from the internal adapter; then, remove the internal adapter bracket from the node (see Remove the internal adapter bracket).
    6. Disconnect all the fan cables from the system board; then, remove the fan cage from the node (see Remove the fan cage).
    7. If necessary for the specific configuration, remove the front air baffle and drive cage assembly to disconnect the PCIe riser cables from the system board (see Remove the air baffle and Remove the drive cage assembly).
    8. If the PCIe riser assembly is installed, remove it from the node and disconnect the PCIe cables from the system board (see Remove the PCIe riser assembly and PCIe riser cable routing).
  2. Disconnect the cables from the rear I/O module.
    1. Loosen the screw that secures the grounding cable; then, remove the grounding cable from the rear I/O module.
    2. Disconnect the rear I/O cable from the rear I/O module.

  3. Remove the rear I/O module.
    1. Remove the three screws from the rear I/O module as illustrated.
    2. Slightly pull the rear I/O module toward the front of the node; then, lift it out of the node.

  4. If necessary, remove the rear air baffle or 2U performance PHM, front air baffle, and drive cage (see Remove the air baffle, Remove the processor and heat sink, or Remove the drive cage assembly). Then, disconnect the rear I/O cable from the system board (see Rear I/O and OCP module cable routing).
    Attention
The task of removing or installing a 2U performance PHM must be executed by a trained technician.

After you finish

  1. Install a replacement unit (see Install a rear I/O module).

  2. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
