Remove a processor

Follow instructions in this section to remove a processor. This task requires a Torx T20 driver. The procedure must be executed by a trained technician.

CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for this task.
    1. Back up the UEFI setting.
    2. Remove the top cover. See Remove the top cover.
    3. Remove all the PCIe assemblies. If the configuration comes with PCIe riser 2 and internal drives, remove all the internal drives, and lift the internal drive backplane before removing PCIe riser 2. See Remove the PCIe riser assembly.
    4. Remove the processor air baffle. See Remove the processor air baffle.
    5. Remove the heat sink. See Remove a heat sink.
  2. Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to loosen the three captive screws; then, slightly lift up the retention frame.
  3. Slightly lift up the rail frame in the direction shown. The processor in the rail frame is spring-loaded.
  4. Hold the tab of the processor carrier and slide the processor carrier out of the rail frame.

  1. Install a replacement unit. See Install a processor.

  2. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
