Replacing the ServeRAID M5120 SAS/SATA Controller for System x

Use this information to replace the ServeRAID M5120 SAS/SATA Controller.

You can purchase the optional ServeRAID M5120 SAS/SATA Controller. The ServeRAID M5120 adapter provides base RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 support. See Supported adapters and Table 1 for more information. For configuration information, see the ServeRAID documentation at Lenovo Data Center Support.
Attention
Some cluster solutions require specific code levels or coordinated code updates. If the device is part of a cluster solution, verify that the latest level of code is supported for the cluster solution before you update the code.

To install a ServeRAID M5120 SAS/SATA adapter, complete the following steps:

Note
If possible, backup or record your RAID configuration information before replacing the adapter. See the documentation for your RAID adapter for information and instructions. Documentation for ServeRAID adapters can be downloaded from Lenovo Data Center Support.
  1. Read the safety information and installation guidelines, see Safety and Installation guidelines.
  2. Touch the static-protective package that contains the new ServeRAID M5120 SAS/SATA adapter to any unpainted surface on the outside of the server; then, grasp the adapter by the top edge or upper corners of the adapter and remove it from the package.
  3. Install the adapter on system board.
    1. Reinstall the RAID cache card onto the adapter, if one was removed earlier (see Replacing a RAID cache card.
    2. Align the ServeRAID M5120 adapter so that the keys align correctly with the connector on the system board.
    3. Insert the adapter into the connector on the system board until it is firmly seated.
      Attention
      Make sure that the adapter is seated correctly. Incomplete insertion might cause damage to the system board or the adapter.
    4. Reconnect the cables to the adapter and to the cache card.
    5. Go tostep 5.
  4. Install the adapter on the PCIe riser-card assembly.
    1. Reinstall the RAID cache card onto the adapter, if one was removed earlier (see Replacing a RAID cache card).
    2. Align the ServeRAID M5120 adapter so that the keys align correctly with the connector on the riser-card assembly.
    3. Insert the adapter into the connector on the riser-card until it is firmly seated.
      Attention
      Make sure that the adapter is seated correctly. Incomplete insertion might cause damage to the system board, the adapter, and the PCIe riser-card assembly.
    4. Reinstall the riser-card assembly onto the system board.
    5. Reconnect the cables to the adapter and to the cache card.
  5. Replace the cover (see Replacing the server top cover).
  6. Slide the server in the rack.
  7. Reconnect the power cord and any cables that you removed.
  8. Turn on the peripheral devices and the server.
  9. Import your RAID configuration to the replacement ServeRAID adapter as a foreign configuration. See Lenovo Data Center Support for instructions.
