Install the PCIe riser card

Follow the instructions in this section to install the PCIe riser card.

About this task

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • Power off the server and peripheral devices, disconnect the power cords from the primary chassis, then disconnect the power cords from the secondary chassis. See Power off the server.

  • Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.

Note
  • The left PCIe riser card is shown below as an example, the replacement procedure for the right PCIe riser card is similar.

  • Ensure that you populate the PCIe riser card in the sequence below:
    1. Primary chassis left riser card
    2. Primary chassis right riser card
    3. Secondary chassis left riser card
    4. Secondary chassis right riser card

Procedure

  1. If you are installing the PCIe riser card in the left riser card position, align and install the cable guide to the chassis.

  2. If necessary, connect the PCIe riser cables to the lower processor board (MB) and power cables to the PDB. See Riser card cable routing.
  3. Align the screw holes in the PCIe riser card with the screw holes in the chassis; then, install four screws to secure the PCIe riser card.

    Note
Make sure the cables are properly routed through the cable clips and do not make contact with the fans or metal parts of the chassis.

After you finish

  1. If you replaced the PCIe riser cables, reinstall the upper processor board (CPU BD) and upper processor board (CPU BD) air baffle. See Install the upper processor board (CPU BD) and Install the upper processor board (CPU BD) air baffle.

  2. Reinstall all the PCIe adapters. See Install a PCIe adapter.

  3. Reinstall the rear top cover. See Install the rear top cover.

  4. Reinstall the front top cover. See Install the front top cover.

  5. Complete the parts replacement. See Complete the parts replacement.
