Remove the upper processor board (CPU BD)

Follow the instructions in this section to remove the upper processor board (CPU BD).

About this task

S002
disconnect all power
CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.
Important
  • When removing the memory modules, label the slot number on each memory module, remove all the memory modules from the upper processor board (CPU BD), and set them aside on a static-protective surface for reinstallation.

  • When disconnecting cables, make a list of each cable and record the connectors the cable is connected to, and use the record as a cabling checklist after installing the new upper processor board (CPU BD).

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • Power off the server and peripheral devices, disconnect the power cords from the primary chassis, then disconnect the power cords from the secondary chassis. See Power off the server.

  • Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.

  • If the server is installed in a rack, remove the server from the rack. See Remove the server from rails.

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for the task.
    1. Remove the front top cover. See Remove the front top cover.
    2. Remove the upper processor board (CPU BD) air baffle. See Remove the upper processor board (CPU BD) air baffle.
    3. If you are replacing the upper processor board (CPU BD), remove all the memory modules and PHMs from the upper processor board (CPU BD). See Remove a memory module and Remove a processor and heat sink.
      Important
To avoid component damage, DO NOT remove or install memory modules or PHMs when the upper processor board (CPU BD) is removed from the chassis.
  2. Disconnect the UPI module cables from the upper processor board (CPU BD).

After you finish

  1. Install a replacement unit. See Install the upper processor board (CPU BD).

  2. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.

    Important
Before you return the upper processor board (CPU BD), make sure that you install the processor socket covers from the new upper processor board (CPU BD). To replace a processor socket cover:
    1. Take a socket cover from the processor socket assembly on the new upper processor board (CPU BD) and orient it correctly above the processor socket assembly on the removed upper processor board (CPU BD).

    2. Gently press down the socket cover legs to the processor socket assembly, pressing on the edges to avoid damage to the socket pins. You might hear a click on the socket cover when it is securely attached.

    3. Make sure that the socket cover is securely attached to the processor socket assembly.

  3. If you plan to recycle the component, see Disassemble the upper processor board (CPU BD) for recycle.
