Install an M.2 drive

Follow the instructions in this section to install an M.2 drive.

About this task

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • Power off the server and peripheral devices, disconnect the power cords from the primary chassis, then disconnect the power cords from the secondary chassis. See Power off the server.

  • Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.

  • If the server is installed in a rack, remove the server from the rack. See Remove the server from rails.

Firmware and driver download: You might need to update the firmware or driver after replacing a component.
Depending on your configuration, follow the corresponding procedures below for proper removal procedure.

Install M.2 drive to M.2 boot adapter

Procedure

  1. Touch the static-protective package that contains the new part to any unpainted surface on the outside of the server; then, take the new part out of the package and place it on a static-protective surface.
  2. (Optional) Adjust the retainer on the M.2 boot adapter to accommodate the particular size of the M.2 drive you wish to install. See Adjust the M.2 retainer.
  3. Locate the connector on the M.2 boot adapter.
    Note
    • Your M.2 boot adapter might look different from the following illustrations, but the installation method is the same.

    • Some M.2 boot adapters support two identical M.2 drives. Install the M.2 drive in slot 0 first.

    1. Insert the M.2 drive into the slot at an angle of approximately 30 degrees.
    2. Pivot the M.2 drive down until the notch at the end of the M.2 drive catches on the lip of the retainer.
    3. Slide the retaining clip forward to secure the M.2 drive to the M.2 boot adapter.

Install M.2 drive to lower processor board (MB)

Procedure

  1. Touch the static-protective package that contains the new part to any unpainted surface on the outside of the server; then, take the new part out of the package and place it on a static-protective surface.
  2. Locate the M.2 drive slots on the lower processor board (MB).

    1. Insert the M.2 drive into the M.2 drive slot at an angle of approximately 15 degrees.
    2. Pivot the other end of the M.2 drive down until the retaining clip engages.

After you finish

  1. If you replaced an M.2 drive on the M.2 boot adapter, reinstall the front top cover. See Install the front top cover.

  2. If you replaced an M.2 drive on the lower processor board (MB), reinstall the following:
    1. For primary chassis only, reinstall the system I/O board and interposer assembly. See Install the system I/O board and interposer board.

    2. For primary chassis only, reinstall the support bracket. See Install the support bracket.

    3. Reinstall the upper processor board (CPU BD). See Install the upper processor board (CPU BD).

    4. Reinstall the upper processor board (CPU BD) air baffle. See Install the upper processor board (CPU BD) air baffle.

    5. Reinstall the front top cover. See Install the front top cover.

  3. Complete the parts replacement. See Complete the parts replacement.
