Remove an M.2 drive

Follow the instructions in this section to remove an M.2 drive.

About this task

Attention
  • Read Installation Guidelines and Safety inspection checklist to ensure that you work safely.

  • Power off the server and peripheral devices, disconnect the power cords from the primary chassis, then disconnect the power cords from the secondary chassis. See Power off the server.

  • Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.

  • If the server is installed in a rack, remove the server from the rack. See Remove the server from rails.

Depending on your configuration, follow the corresponding procedures below for proper removal procedure.

Remove M.2 drive from M.2 boot adapter

Procedure

  1. Remove the front top cover. See Remove the front top cover.
  2. Remove the M.2 drive.

    1. Pinch and hold on the retainer clip.
    2. Slide the retainer backward to loosen the M.2 drive from the M.2 boot adapter.
    3. Pivot the rear side of the M.2 drive away from the M.2 boot adapter.
    4. Pull the M.2 drive away from the slot at an angle of approximately 30 degrees.

Remove M.2 drive from lower processor board (MB)

Procedure

  1. Make preparation for the task.
    1. Remove the front top cover. See Remove the front top cover.
    2. Remove the upper processor board (CPU BD) air baffle. See Remove the upper processor board (CPU BD) air baffle.
    3. Remove the upper processor board (CPU BD). See Remove the upper processor board (CPU BD).
    4. For primary chassis only, remove the support bracket. See Remove the support bracket.
    5. For primary chassis only, remove the system I/O board and interposer assembly. See Remove the system I/O board and interposer board.
  2. Remove the M.2 drive.

    1. Press the blue M.2 retaining clip.
    2. The M.2 drive will slightly lift away from the lower processor board (MB).
    3. Hold the edge of the M.2 drive to pull it out of the M.2 drive slot at an angle of approximately 15 degrees.

After you finish

  1. Adjust the retainer on the M.2 boot adapter to accommodate the particular size of the M.2 drive you wish to install. See Adjust the M.2 retainer.

  2. Install a replacement unit. See Install an M.2 drive.

  3. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
