Remove an M.2 boot adapter

Follow the instructions in this section to remove an M.2 boot adapter.

CAUTION
The power-control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the electrical current supplied to the device. The device also might have more than one power cord. To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected from the power source.
Attention

  • Power off the server and disconnect all power cords for this task. See Power off the server.

  • Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static-sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.

  • If the server is in a rack, remove it from the rack.

  • If foot stands are installed on the server, pivot them inwards and lay the server on its side for easier operation.

Procedure

  1. Make preparations for this task.
    1. Remove the server cover. See Remove the server cover.
    2. Remove all M.2 drives from the M.2 boot adapter. See Remove an M.2 drive.
  2. Disconnect all the cables from the M.2 boot adapter.
    1. Loosen the screw on the signal cable.
    2. Tilt the connector and remove it.
    3. Remove the power cable.

    1. Unhook the wire bail on the cable from the connector.
    2. Disconnect the cable from the M.2 boot adapter.
  3. Remove the M.2 boot adapter.
    1. Loosen the screw that secures the M.2 boot adapter to the chassis.
    2. Slightly slide the M.2 boot adapter towards the side of the M.2 screw hole; then, carefully lift the M.2 adapter away from the rear pin.

After this task is completed

  1. Install a replacement unit. See Install an M.2 boot adapter.

  2. If you are instructed to return the component or optional device, follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
