IOM (ESM) failed

Important
  • Although the drive shelf is still operational, you should correct this failure as soon as possible. If the other IOM or its communication path fails, all I/O to that drive shelf will fail.

  • For some failures, the fault indicator light on an IOM will not be lit.

  • Both IOMs in the same drive shelf must have the same firmware version and be of the same hardware type.

CAUTION
Risk of data loss

Recovery from a failed IOM when there are also associated volume and drive failures on the same drive shelf is a complicated procedure that, if done incorrectly, could result in the loss of data. If you see other failures, then contact your Technical Support Engineer for assistance.

Make sure you correctly identify the affected IOM. Removing the remaining optimal IOM or disconnecting drive shelf cables to it while I/O is in progress can cause data loss.

CAUTION
Possible loss of data accessibility

Before proceeding, ensure that the OK to remove field in the Details area indicates Yes. If No is displayed, it indicates that there is another component that must be serviced first. Always select Recheck prior to and after servicing a component to ensure that there aren't any new problems that may affect the component you plan to service.

CAUTION
Electrostatic discharge can damage sensitive components

Always use proper anti-static protection when handling components. Touching components without using a grounding wrist strap may damage equipment.

Recovery Steps

  1. Is there power to the affected drive shelf and are the external cables secure?

    • If yes, go to step 2.

    • If no, correct the problem and then go to step 8.

  2. Identify the failed IOM shown in the Location field in the Details area.

  3. With the cables still connected to the IOM, remove it from the drive shelf, wait 10 seconds, and re-insert it firmly into place.

  4. Wait 40 seconds, then select Recheck to ensure the problem has been resolved. If a failed IOM is still being reported, go to step 5; otherwise you are finished with this procedure.

  5. Label each cable connected to the failed IOM to ensure proper reconnection.

  6. Remove the failed IOM and replace it with an IOM having the same hardware type and firmware version.

  7. Reconnect the cables and then wait 40 seconds.

  8. Select Recheck to ensure the problem has been resolved.
