Replace a compute node

Use this information to replace a defective compute node.

Attention
  • Only trained service technicians are allowed to perform this procedure. Unauthorized personnel should not attempt to replace this component.

  • If possible, back up all compute node settings, including the settings of the optional components installed in the compute node.

Important
After a compute node is replaced, it is required to update the compute node with the latest firmware or restore the pre-existing firmware. Make sure that you have the latest firmware or a copy of the preexisting one before you proceed (see Firmware updates for more information).
Before replacing a compute node:
  1. Read the following section(s) to ensure that you work safely.
  2. Turn off the corresponding compute node that you are going to perform the task on.

  3. Remove the compute node or compute-expansion node assembly from the enclosure (see Remove a compute node from the enclosure or Remove the compute-expansion node assembly from the enclosure).

Complete the following steps to replace a compute node:

  1. Remove one of the following components from the compute node:
  2. Remove the air baffle from the compute node (see Remove the air baffle).
  3. Remove all the drives and drive bay fillers, and place them on a static-protective surface (see Remove a hot-swap drive).
    Note
Record the drive bay number when removing the drives so that you can install them back into the same drive bays in the replacement compute node.
  4. If a KVM breakout module has been installed in the compute node, remove it (see Remove the KVM breakout module).
  5. If a RAID adapter has been installed in the compute node, remove it and place it on a static-protective surface (see Remove a RAID adapter from the compute node).
  6. Remove the drive backplane from the compute node (see Remove the drive backplane), and immediately install it in the replacement compute node (see Install the drive backplane).
  7. Install the drives that were removed earlier to the replacement compute node (see Install a hot-swap drive).
  8. Transfer processor and heat sink assembly 1 (the rear processor) from the compute node to the replacement unit:
    1. Remove the socket cover from the processor socket in which you plan to install the processor in the replacement compute node.
    2. Remove the processor and heat sink assembly from the defective compute node (see Remove a processor and heat sink).
    3. Install the processor and heat sink assembly into the socket in the replacement compute node (see Install a processor and heat sink).
    4. Orient the socket cover that was removed earlier above the empty processor socket in the defective compute node; then, gently press on the four corners of the socket cover that you placed on the empty processor socket in to secure the cover to the socket.
    Attention
When transferring a processor and heat sink assembly to a replacement compute node:
    • Install the removed processor and heat sink assembly to the replacement compute node immediately after removal.

    • Always protect an empty processor socket in a compute node with a socket cover.

  9. Repeat the previous step for the second processor and heat sink assembly (the front processor) if necessary.
  10. Remove one memory module at a time from the defective compute node (see Remove a memory module), and immediately install it into the same memory module slot in the replacement compute node (see Install a memory module) until all the memory modules are transferred.
  11. If a M.2 backplane has been installed in the compute node, remove it (see Remove the M.2 backplane) and install it in the replacement compute node (see Install the M.2 backplane).
  12. If a TCM/TPM has been installed in the compute node, remove it from the compute node (see Remove the Trusted Cryptographic Module (TCM)), and install it in the replacement compute node (see Install the Trusted Cryptographic Module (TCM)).
  13. If a RAID adapter has been removed, install it in the replacement compute node (see Install a RAID adapter into the compute node).
  14. If a KVM breakout module has been removed, install it in the replacement compute node (see Install the KVM breakout module).
  15. Route and connect all cables transferred in previous steps (see Internal cable routing).
  16. Install the air baffle in the replacement compute node (see Install the air baffle).
    Note
For proper cooling and airflow, make sure to install the air baffle. Operating the node with the air baffle removed might lead to component damage.
  17. Install the component removed in step 1:

    Compute node cover:

    1. Install the original node cover to the replacement unit.
    2. Install the replacement unit cover to the defective unit and return it to Lenovo. Make sure to follow all packaging instructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.

    PCIe expansion node:

    1. Install the PCIe expansion node that was removed earlier to the replacement compute node (see Install the PCIe expansion node to a compute node).

After replacing the compute node:

  1. Install the compute node or compute-expansion node assembly into the enclosure (see Install a compute node in the enclosure or Install the compute-expansion node assembly into the enclosure).

  2. Update the machine type and serial number with new vital product data (VPD). Use the Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager to update the machine type and serial number. See Update the machine type and serial number.

  3. Enable Trusted Platform Module/Transmission Control Module (TPM/TCM). See Enable TPM/TCM.

  4. Optionally, enable Secure Boot.

  5. Update the compute node configuration.
    • Download and install the latest device drivers: Lenovo Data Center Support

    • Update the system firmware (see Firmware updates).

    • Update the UEFI configuration.

    • Reconfigure the disk arrays if you have installed or removed a hot-swap drive or a RAID adapter. See the Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager User Guide, which is available for download at: Lenovo Data Center Support

  6. If you are planning to recycle the compute node, follow the instruction in Disassemble the compute node for recycle for compliance with local regulations.

Important
Before returning the defective compute node, make sure that a socket cover is securely attached to each empty processor socket and the cover was re-installed over the defective node.
